History of The Sport of Polo
Central Asia can claim its roots for the origins of Polo which was inspired by military men training on horses for battling in wars. The oldest of equestrian sports; Polo eventually migrated to Persia (modern day Iran) where it was formalized as a game for military men and nobilities. Polo is referred to as the Sport of Kings.
From Persia it spread west; specifically, to India. Manipur, which is a northeastern state in India modernized the game of Polo and is where the first Polo Club was founded by the ruling British Military.
The Brits were so enthusiastic by the sport of Polo they brought their new pastime back home where it took hold. Neighboring Ireland and eventually, Argentina and Australia caught wind of this elite hobby and decided to join the fun.
In the Winter of 1876 Polo was brought to New York and played at a city riding academy; after which it was moved to an outdoor field in Westchester County. That first Summer the original New York Polo players brought the Polo game to Newport, RI. Ten years later in 1886 the very first US International Polo Game was played in Newport, RI. Polo has been a huge part of the Newport/Aquidneck Island culture ever since. Go Newport!!!
Bimini-me is spending considerable time at Polo events in Newport, RI and in Wellington, FL this year. Our recent partnership with US Polo Association and our participation at the Gauntlet of Polo has further awakened a lust for the equestrian lifestyle. Wherever there’s Polo being played outdoors there’s a need for sun coverage. The most noble of equine sports beckons equipment not just for the players but also for the spectators. Bystanders blinded by sun glares finally have shelter. Spectators sizzling their skin can now relax under their personal Bimini-me.
Dressing for Polo has always been an eventful undertaking. Ladies and Gents donning their equine sportiest can add to their flair with a Bimini-me sunshade. Everyone loves a utilitarian accessory that looks elegant!
Brynne and I believe it’s perfect timing and utterly practical for Parasols to make a revival. Parasols have been in existence for 4000 years and were first recorded in ancient Egypt. Originally made of leaves and branches and then eventually made of animal skins; seeking shade is a natural impulse.
Our climate today combined with greater awareness of skin health is the perfect reason why parasols need to unfurl their appendages. Bimini-me has you covered!!! We’ve modernized, masculinized and stylized the age-old sun-solution for the modern equestrian. See you at Polo!!!
